Joe has been making guitars for a really long time. His Guitars are known for their superior projection and solid, round, tone. When asked about the 'secret' to the superior tone of his instruments, Joe replied, "My secret is one you have witnessed many times, and one that I can't leave to posterity... for it consists of the tactile senses in my finger pads, in my thumb and index finger that tell the intelligent builder if the top is or is not well made, and how it should be treated to obtain the best tone from the instrument."

Joe's career has been characterized by a series of stunning innovations. Realizing that the soundboard was the key to the guitars voice, he made his tops thinner with lighter bracing. This features has been widely imitated by guitar makers around the world. Joe also pioneered the use of alternative materials for backs and sides when he built his famous paper mache guitar. Today, guitars can be found that are made of every conceivable material including pressboard, sheet metal and carbon fiber (thanks Joe !)
