I began my guitar making career in 1981 doing repair and restoration work on a part time basis. In 1994 I built my first guitar and have been a full time professional guitar maker since 1998. I've studied guitar acoustics with Al Carruth and archtop guitar construction with Tom Ribbecke and Linda Manzer. Today, I specialize in custom made flattop steel string guitars, archtop jazz guitars and nylon string "crossover" guitars.

The guitars I offer for sale here on GuitarMaker Direct are usually instruments that I built to display at handmade guitar shows, but sometimes they will be guitars that I built just for the fun of it!

Flattop, Steel string, Manzer Wedge, Macassar ebony trim, Gold Schaller mini tuners

25.5" Scale length - 1 3/4" Nut width - 2 1/4" String spacing at saddle

Builder's comments: This Bristlecone is comparable to an OM style guitar. Its sensitivity to touch and its complex, clear tone will bring your fingerstyle tunes to life. The parabolic neck profile and slight Manzer Wedge will keep you comfortable while you play, and the figured ziricote will dazzle the eyes for hours on end.

25.4" Scale length - 1 3/4" Nut width - 2 1/4" String spacing at saddle

Builder's comments: Running Dog Mini Jumbo -- 'il gatto rosso' The blackwood back and sides combine with the old-growth redwood soundboard to give a rich, warm tone and great response. The wedged body makes it as comfortable to play as it is pleasant to hear (and with the soundport, you’ll be enjoying it as much as your audience). The cat is an homage to both the Chat Noir of 1930’s Paris and to the Cat in my life.

27.65" Scale length - 1 13/16" Nut width - 2 3/8" String spacing at saddle

Builder's comments: The Great Bear-i-tone has a rich and robust tone with excellent volume and response. Designed to be tuned to B, it also works well in a dropped-A and low slack key tunings. The slightly wider fingerboard gives room for the larger string gauges. A Manzer wedge body and soundport -- and excellent intonation -- make it a joy to play. A custom Ameritage case is included.

My path to Lutherie was a circuitous route starting with the end of my service career as a Jet Engine Mechanic for the US Air force. I went to a technical college and studied Mechanical Engineering Technology, Metallurgy and Physics. This training was useful for designing and building guitars and applying physics to make them sound their best.

I began building guitars in the early 1990s after completing a course in guitar building offered by the American School of Lutherie under the direction of Master Luthier Charles Fox. I also studied guitar acoustics under the Master Luthier Al Carruth, who had studied under Master violin maker, Carlene Hutchins.

My acoustic guitars are built with the finest woods. The tops and backs are tuned to produce efficient harmonic motion. They have a big voice even in smaller guitars like the Parlor model.

Flattop, Steel string, 12 Fret, Planetary Gear Tuners 16:1 ratio

24.5" Scale length - 1 3/4" Nut width - 2.55" String spacing at saddle

Builder's comments: This is not an ordinary guitar. This is a hand-built, in Livermore, CA, Parlor size acoustic guitar that is as loud as the larger Folk guitars and has great sustain due to optimizing the plates to produce efficient simple harmonic motion. It has planetary gear tuners that are about half the weight of enclosed tuners thus the perfect balance at the neck-body joint.

My career in the arts has been lifelong and wide-ranging, encompassing drawing, ceramics, music, poetry, theater, and musical instrument making. I got into guitar making in 1999, and have found this to be one of the most rewarding of creative pursuits. The process of designing and building guitars that excel in sound quality, playability, functionality, and beauty engages my imagination, my intellect, and my manual skills in a way that is wonderfully challenging and fulfilling.

Then I get to play them! And hear them sing in the hands of many other players as well. Life is good.

Please visit my web site for a more in-depth look at my work. Thank you for your interest.

Flattop, Steel string, Sound port, Elevated fretboard, Rare (breathtaking!) ziricote

25.6" Scale length - 1 3/4" Nut width - 2 1/4" String spacing at saddle

Builder's comments: The unique Headwaters shape puts the bridge at the widest part of the body, resulting in a surprisingly big sound for a small guitar. Its voice is lively and powerful: great projection, a tone that is both warm and clear, meaty trebles, and a very wide dynamic range. The elevated fretboard and 15th fret neck join provide exceptional upper fret access. An extremely versatile guitar.

John Mayes - 2010 L-32 - LS Redwood / Brazilian rosewood

John Mayes
John Mayes Guitars

Norman, OK

Phone: 405-312-3331

Email: Johnm@mayesguitars.com

Website: www.mayesguitars.com

John started his lutherie career in 1996 when he built his first instrument, a walnut/cedar parlor guitar. He continued to build guitars, pouring himself into each one as they continually improved. He accepted a position in 2001, working under the guidance of luthier Dana Bourgeois at Pantheon Guitars in Lewiston, Maine. While in Maine, John had a hand in building hundreds of guitars, refining his skills along the way. Some time later, John moved back to his home state of Oklahoma to start his own lutherie, Mayes Guitars.

Then in early 2007 John, looking for a change of pace, went to work for McPherson Guitars. While at McPherson John was involved in almost every aspect of the guitar building process at one time or another. From building the bodies, to finish and fretwork John made his mark on hundreds of McPherson Guitars.

In early 2009 John moved back to Oklahoma, again, and resumed making world class acoustics. His vast experience over the past decade has help shape him into an well rounded luthier who is well versed in coaxing the most out of an instrument.

John has built over 270 instruments that bear his name ranging from steel string acoustics to ukuleles, and electric guitars.

Flattop, Steel string, 13 Fret, Nickel Waverly tuners, Brazilian rosewood fretboard

24.75" Scale length - 1 3/4" Nut width - 2 1/4" String spacing at saddle

Builder's comments: This L-32 is a special piece. It's L-00 sized guitar with a short scale and 13 frets to the body. It features a rare and collectible "Lucky Strike" or LS redwood top, and back and sides from premium Brazilian rosewood. The tone is rich, balanced and excels under almost any style. Very responsive yet articulate and powerful. A custom Ameritage case is included.

Builder's comments: Shown at Healdsburg and purchased by a repeat customer, this small-bodied powerhouse is available at a great price. It is in as-new condition and has been recently adjusted and set-up. It's a great blues/ragtime or old-time guitar, with lots of growl, volume and punch.

Flattop, Steel string, Cutaway, Manzanita burl rossette

25.6" Scale length - 1 3/4" Nut width - 2 5/16" String spacing at saddle

Builder's comments: This is an exceptionally lively guitar. It is surprising sensitivity to a light touch yet retains the ability to be "driven". The response is balanced perfectly across the entire fret board. The tonal content includes presence, clarity, "woodiness", warmth and just the right amount of sweetness. It projects openly while still enveloping the player in the notes. A truly wonderful guitar.

I have been passionate about guitars my entire life. Since childhood I remember wondering how guitars worked and were built. I began building professionally in 2001, after working for seven years in the corporate world as a graphic designer. I came to realize that my interests in woodworking at the time, boat building, and my love of guitars, intersected into my true passion: lutherie. I completed my training at the American School of Lutherie and worked for a period of time with legendary luthier Charles Fox.

Recently, I moved operations from Phoenix, Arizona, to Madison, Wisconsin, and set up a small studio where I work independently building quality hand-crafted guitars. I choose to work alone so I may personally attend to every detail of the guitars I build. I am fanatical about quality and I want to ensure that every instrument that bears my name is worthy of being called a Woolson Soundcraft guitar.

My guitars have many unique features you won't find on other instruments, and ones that give my guitars their distinctive sound and personality. My aesthetic appointments are clean, elegant and understated. I prefer to showcase the materials and let them speak for themselves.

I have built for musicians with a variety of different musical styles and I very much enjoy working with each of them to help them discover the guitar of their dreams.

Flattop, Steel string, Sound port, Pickup, Sunburst finish, Highlander iP1

24" Scale length - 1 13/16" Nut width - 57mm String spacing at saddle

Builder's comments: This is a wonderful little guitar. The voice on it is MUCH bigger than the size would suggest. Works very well in dropped tunings (DADGAD).

In the early eighties while studying graphic design in Southern California I did various woodworking projects as a hobby and fell in love with every aspect of woodworking and quickly moved from graphic design to building custom furniture.

After winning the top award at the Design In Wood Show at Del Mar I decided to try an idea I had toyed with for some time, the building of an acoustic guitar. I checked out some books from the library and after only one guitar, I was hooked.

My specialty is acoustic flat top fingerstyle guitars. I also build a dreadnought model and the occasional "arched top" and classical guitar. The guitars I sell on line are show/display guitars and the occasional spec guitar.

Flattop, Steel string, Cutaway, Sound port, , Brazilian rosewood fingerboard & bridge

25.5 Scale length - 1-3/4" Nut width - 2-3/32" String spacing at saddle

Builder's comments: This 12 fret cutaway is bright, clear, rich and responsive to even the lightest touch, yet it can be played hard without it's tone breaking up. The adjustable, opposing grain, center laminated, bolt on neck is a full fingerboard length neck design supporting the playing surface from end to end. The interlocking radial x-bracing is designed to give the soundboard great strength and stability while allowing the top to react freely to the string energy. It comes with an Ameritage case.

Flattop, Steel string, Cutaway, Sound port, Artistic inlay, (by Larry Robinson)

25.4" Scale length - 1 3/4" Nut width - 2 1/4" String spacing at saddle

Builder's comments: The prancing seahorse (actually, a hippocampus) figure was drawn by Zoe Brookes, then cut and engraved by Larry Robinson -- in Greek mythology, two of these pulled Poseidon's chariot through the waves. The guitar is voiced powerfully, with excellent balance and richness. It's set up for comfortable fingerstyle playing but will handle skillful flatpicking as well.
